Micromanaging

I am a big believer in the idea that if you ask someone to do something, you really should just stand back and let them do it. They're doing the work; it's their time and effort which is getting the job done. Leave them to handle it as they see fit.

This doesn't apply, say, to raising your kids or training a new hire of course. You have to watch over them because they're still learning. I understand too that a large setting may require legitimate oversight, or perhaps well defined work protocols. So what I say applies best in one on one situations between competent adults. You ask a friend or family member for a favor, allow them to do the favor as they are able.

I routinely ask me brother Phil to do things at the Shop. Yet I rarely back seat drive. I say, "Phil, do that," and he does it as he will. I try not to direct his moves, even when I disagree with his approach. I asked him to do it. I need to let him.

As a matter of course, if I want something done in a certain way, I do it. I firmly believe that's how you ought to approach any chore. Conversely, if I get asked to do something, I appreciate being let alone to do it (outside of basic necessary information, of course). I try to observe the same courtesy for anyone who's shoulder I tap. So far as I'm concerned, it shows courtesy and respect. And if you don't like how they do things, there's an easy solution. Do it yourself.

Wire Nutty

I don't mind fellas trying to repair their own stuff. Hell, I often try to repair my own stuff myself. But do you have to make it so hard for me to repair the stuff you've tried to repair?

Some guys must think that they're banking millions by the amount of wire they save. I'll need to get into the reverse switch box of some drain snake and there won't be more than an inch of electric wire to work with. You can't move anything around because there's not enough wire to allow free movement. I end up cutting wires and starting over, peeling back the outer sheath of power cord to give myself four or five inches of wire to work with.

But because during 'repair' they used so little cord, I have to remove any and all switches in order to reattach the wire. Then I can actually begin to diagnose whatever the original problem might have been.

First, do no harm. It works for doctors. It ought to work for do it yourselfers too.

I hate DIY shows

They make it look so easy, all those home improvement shows with all their do it yourself tips. Put a board here, a splash of paint there, and your house is now the freakin' Taj Mahal.

BZZZZZ! Wrong answer! They're experts, people! They've worked years to be able to work as quickly and smoothly as they do on their shows.

You're not an expert. If you only handle a saw twice a year you're gonna make bad cuts. Period.

Plus, they get outtakes, which we never see aired. Do you get an outtake? NO! You get your wife telling you how easy it was on TV to add a deck and a dormer it's so simple why can't you do it just like they did and what kind of idiot did I get stuck with Mom was right I should have married Roger. That's what you get.

It just ain't that simple, folks. Especially since your house is probably fine just like it is.

Am I right?

The DIY fallacy

I swear, if I see one more do-it-yourself show I am so gonna lose it!

DIY, HGTV, and all their sister stations, I hate them. hate them, hate them! It seems that every show I see on those networks all revolve around people redoing rooms and homes that DON'T NEED REDOING! A camera will pan slowly across a room in its 'before' state while an announcer bemoans the fact that SOMETHING simply MUST be done about those dreadful 90's COLORS!

What's wrong with 90's colors? Is the room still functional? I mean, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot people, it's a living room! If your friends care more about the appearance of the room than visiting with you, well, then, I say to Hell with them.

I mean, too, what kind of life do you have when you're embarrassed by a perfectly good living room solely because it hasn't been repainted since 2005? Can't you take a decent shower in a nicely tiled bathroom even if the tile dates to 1977? Come on, folks, get a life!

Decadence, that's what it is, pure and simple. What a crock.

I'll just sign off with mindless, incomprehensible grumbling now. Mumble grumble rackin' frakin' dipwads with too much time on their hands...
