The Story Stays the Same

I heard something from Ron the other day which I never expected to hear. After four holes of golf he remarked, "Huh. You and I are tied."

Wow. I was still in the game after four holes played.

Of course, a full round of golf is 18 holes. Things soon returned to normal. The Earth resumed spinning on its axis, and the angelic choir went for lunch. The New York Yankees took control of the Chicago White Sox and that was that.

Ah well. It was still a day out of the office. Beautiful golf course too.

Twisted Golf

If you aren't at least a modest golf fan, this probably will mean nothing to you. So it goes. To even only a moderate golf fan such as myself, though, I'm stupefied.

While watching the Texas Open this past weekend I saw something I had never seen before: a sand trap smack in the middle of the putting green. What sick, twisted fiend would do such a thing?

Sand traps are the bane of many a golfer. Still, I get them in the context of the game: they make it more challenging. They make you make your shots; if you hit the ball into the trap, you hit poorly.

But you're supposed to hit the green. The game is designed for you to make the green. That's where the hole is after all, the place where the adventure ends. That you might get punished for that is simply wrong. It's what you would find on Satan's back nine. Or front nine more likely, to clue you in on whatever additional horrors which must surely come after the hellish monstrosity of a sand trap on a putting surface.

Traps on greens just ain't right, folks.

Golf, kind of

Jumping around on a Wacky Wednesday...

I haven't golfed once this year. Even though for years I rarely went out more than once or twice anyway, this probably makes the first time I haven't golfed at all in a year since the 1980s. Of course, there's time yet.

I haven't been to a baseball game this year either. But that, unless things change dramatically, will not happen.

Of course (get it?) there are those who say I've never actually golfed. You know who you are.

On the plus side, I've yet to bogie.

On the down side, uh, on the down side, uh, I'm not sure there is a down side. Though I've tried my golf game hasn't hit bottom. I know this.

Of course (I'm trying this pun again) I have lined up the wrong way on the tee box. And Ron thought standing behind me was the safest place to be, ha, ha!

Go ahead, you want to say it. And with that, adieu!
