Mom's Turn

We know all about Dad jokes, right? As a dad, I've proudly and defiantly told my share. But what about Moms? Why don't Mom jokes get their day? Well, let's rectify that. Here's a Mom joke, from me very own Mom.

Mom suffered with diabetes the last twenty or so years of her life, but that didn't get her down. When declining a sugary treat of whatever kind she would explain, "No, thank you. I'm already so sweet I have to take pills for it."

Right on, Mom!

Mischief Makers

Allow me one more repeat today, then I'll try to be more original tomorrow. Quiet Ron.

Me Mom gets very repetitive these days. That's understandable and we all just roll with it. There are times where she realizes herself that's she's doing it, repeating herself constantly.

While we were out yesterday she must have asked me a dozen times in the first half hour, "Are we going to eat?" After about the sixth time she paused and cackled, "I'm giving you are a hard time aren't I?" After another pause she added, "But it ain't like you never gave me a hard time growing up!"

"Nuh-uh, Mrs. Cosgriff, that were them other boys of yours giving you trouble!" I protested playfully. Understand here that I have four brothers.

Mom got quiet and commenced to staring at me out the corner of her sharpened eye. When she had stared at me for several seconds she responded simply, "I'm sure you done enough mischief on your own."

What could I say? Moms know those things.

Opie the Terminator

Since I'm thinking about it, seeing as I spoke about Opie from the Andy Griffith Show yesterday, I am reminded of one of me Pops' favorite pictures.

Me son Frank is redheaded. When he was still quite young, 6 or 7 or thereabouts, he had a faux leather jacket we'd put on him when it was chilly. He also had a pair of sunglasses he liked.

One day as we arrived at me Mom and me Pops for a visit, Frank was wearing both. "It's Opie the Terminator!" Pops remarked with a hearty laugh.

We have a picture of him that day. I need to find it.

Conditions for Marriage

The following is a joke. It is only a joke. Please put your sectional, religious, and political preferences aside and take it that way, a bit of humor which has become part of family lore.

On the surface, you wouldn't think me Mom and me Pops could make a marriage work. Dad was a Catholic, a northerner, and a Democrat. Mom was Southern, Baptist, and from one of the few Republican enclaves in 1940s Dixie. Yet they were happily married for 56 years and had seven wonderful children. Particularly the second.

As me Pops himself told the story, when he proposed Mom (obviously) said yes, but with three conditions. "I will raise my children Catholic. I will even raise them Yankees. But I will not raise them Democrats," she told him.

Well, two out of three ain't bad, Pops must've figured, because he accepted her terms. And things worked out. Pops even became a Republican.
