A Snowball's Chance

First of all, credit where it's due. The weather forecasters for Detroit and environs were quite right that temperatures were going fall fast, and to dangerous levels of cold. They appear to be correct about the high winds making it feel colder that it is. A tip of the hat is proper. Yet we will get nowhere near the amount of snow that was being predicted as recently as, oh, twelve hours before I hammered this missive out. Christmas Snowmageddon 2022 will not happen.

I'm not saying that conditions aren't serious. I'm not saying that we shouldn't take rational precautions. But I am saying the whole thing is just like COVID: 'we're all gonna die if we don't isolate at home' seems to be the basic, go-to response of government experts.

I mean, who ultimately drives weather forecasts? The National Weather Service. A government agency. Who drove the COVID scare? The National Institutes of Health. A government agency. Who needs to justify their jobs to keep them? Government bureaucrats. How do they keep their jobs? By instilling fear in the citizenry, for one thing.

They're going to succeed in the exact opposite of the best response if they're not careful. People not unlike me will see it as crying wolf, and won't believe them when an actual predatory animal nears until it really is too late.

Reason 58,319 That I Don't Get Government

Many of you know that I recently had a book published. As of today I am owed for the first month's royalties. No, I'm not taking everyone out. The sales aren't aren't that impressive, although for one month availability with next to no push I'm happy. And I can't get the money anyway until I give my publisher a W-9. I truly don't understand why I must do that.

Do you know what the book people need in order to pay me? My address and my Social Security Number. Do you know what information goes on a W-9? My address and Social Security Number. Nothing more. Not another scratch.

Why can't I simply give my publisher that information? Why must there even be such a form? It doesn't make sense; I see absolutely no rhyme nor reason for it.

Oh, I'm sure there's some bit of bureaucratic doggerel somewhere which completely justifies it. Once I hear it I'm sure I will be totally converted to the government's reasoning. I just need to be enlightened.

That's sarcasm, by the way. I'm sure the justification will not convince me.

Thomas Sowell opined that, for bureaucracies, it's not about the sanest way to do things. It's about the process and nothing else. He's right.

The little bakery

While at a farmers market up north recently I came upon a vendor of baked goods. He had chocolate chip cranberry cookies which were delightful, and carrot cake scones which were out of this world. I guarantee you I will seek out this baker the next time I'm in Hessel. Such small businesses merit our support.

Still, something unrelated to his wares caught my attention. It was the stickers which he apparently was forced to add onto each of his baked goods packages. The stickers warned me with an underlined emphasis, 'This product was produced in a kitchen unregulated by the Michigan Department of Agriculture'.

My first thought was, good. We need more of that. We need the government farther out of our lives.

Do you know that it never once occurred to me that I might have been in danger from this guy's baked goods? Why should I even have presumed such evil? A small business especially in a small community where it needs to treat people well or simply not survive has, inherently, my best interests at heart. Note: I did not die, nor was I harmed in any way by the cookies or scones.

I have however and on several occasions in my life been seriously ill from eating tainted foods which had indeed been and undoubtedly quite thoroughly inspected by my government. Department of Agriculture oversight did not save me from calamity then.

I say, more power to this little baker in Hessel working out of his own kitchen, and less to the bureaucrats who have no real hand in the actual satisfaction of consumer wants and needs. More power to the people who actually want to address consumer demand and less authority to the folks paid to look for wrongs to be righted. Such paragons of virtue will always find evil. Their jobs rely on it.
